While working in a factory may not seem like the most glamorous of careers and may not seem to offer high incomes or advancement opportunities, there are some great benefits available when working in factory jobs.

Here are 5 reasons why you might want to consider a job working in a factory.

1. Lots of Entry-level Job Openings Available

Most entry-level jobs require no qualifications and training is completed on the job.

This makes these jobs ideal if the academic side of school didn’t appeal to you, or if you want to get a job where you know you can start immediately and start earning a steady income.

Factory jobs are available in a wide range of industries, so depending on what is available where you live or where you want to live, you have a lot of choice over the type of work you could be doing.

Because the work undertaken in many factories is producing the goods that keep the country running, in most economic cycles there is still work available. There is often a regular turnover of staff, so job openings are regularly available.

The high staff turnover is often because some people take these jobs on as temporary work like students working night shifts while completing their studies, older workers nearing the end of their working life who just want to work for a few years before retiring, or those using this as their first job to earn money then move onto something else.

2. You Get to See the Results of Your Work

In most instances, in a factory, you are making a finished product so you can see what you have achieved each day. You get to see the tangible results of your arduous work.

You won’t get frustrated working on something abstract where you don’t get to see the finished product. It’s rewarding when you can see how the work you have done has created something that will have a real effect on the lives of the end consumer.

3. Many Factory Jobs Pay Well

Factory jobs are often considered for low-skilled, unqualified workers who receive a minimum wage. But that’s not always true!

It can depend on what industry you are working in.

I’ve had two factory jobs; one paid a minimum hourly wage but added a daily bonus based on the amount of work completed by my team and by the entire factory. On top of that, if the work for each day was not completed within 8 hours, we continued at a higher pay rate until the work was completed. Then at busy times of the year, we also had the option to work on Saturdays and sometimes public holidays at 1.5 or double our normal hourly pay rate.

The factory had its Nursing staff on site to help with any injuries because of the repetitive nature of the work which was also very physical.

When you had been employed beyond a specific qualifying period you became eligible for medical insurance and retirement savings plans paid or subsidized by the employer.

The other factory job paid a minimal wage but often let workers work up to 10 or 12-hour shifts, plus Saturday work during busy periods to help staff earn more. Once a month any products produced that were classed as seconds were given away to staff for free.

They also had a subsidized life and disability insurance plan for all staff and put on a takeaway-type meal every month to thank the staff for their hard work.

4. The Work Keeps You Active

You are usually on your feet all day and could be undertaking several tasks that have you bending, stretching, lifting, etc. This physical aspect of factory work keeps you in shape, it makes the workday pass quickly with little chance for boredom.

5. Factory Jobs Offer Opportunities for Growth and Development

An entry-level job is just a starting point. When you show your enthusiasm for the job and the effort you put in, you will open up opportunities for advancement. This could be working on a machine that needs specific specialized training, or in a supervisory position.

Factory jobs tend to offer strong job security and non-income benefits. Even if you leave the factory job and begin seeking jobs elsewhere, the work ethic gained from factory work and the skills you have developed make you a strong candidate for many other careers.
