Millennial Magazine - safe and healthy home

Every parent wants to ensure their kids are safe. It’s a desire all parents share, and it represents the most critical part of parenting, Keeping your children out of harm’s way. The fact is, though, it can be challenging to keep your children safe when you’re not entirely sure what constitutes a safety hazard in the home. The following tips will give you the tools you need to ensure a safe and healthy home for your children.

Have Clean Water

It’s no secret that contaminated water is a global health concern. The World Health Organization has stated that “nearly 1 in 10 people have to cope with arsenic-contaminated water.” Unfortunately, many people don’t realize the dangers of drinking tap water and other contaminated water sources. Not only can contaminated water cause intestinal problems and diseases, but it can also be fatal in high doses. That’s why it’s crucial to invest in a good quality water filter system to ensure you and your family are drinking safe, clean water. A quality filter system will remove harmful toxins like arsenic, lead, and mercury making it safe for consumption.

Keep The House Clean

Parents are often surprised to find the number one cause of home injuries among children under five falls. Kids take a lot of tumbles, especially when they’re starting to learn how to walk. However, you can prevent falls easily by cleaning up clutter around your house. Keep your stairs clear and remove any rugs or carpets that are loose or fraying. You should also keep furniture away from windows to prevent your child from climbing on pieces of furniture and falling out a window.

Keep The House Safe

You might think it’s obvious, but you’d be surprised at how many parents forget to secure their homes with locks or child-proof devices. Not only does this put your child in danger, but it can make you liable for any injuries that occur to the child. If you’re looking for a way to store dangerous chemicals or store potentially hazardous tools, consider installing a finger-proof cabinet lock. You should also look into buying safety latches for your cabinets and drawers if they do not already come with them.

Keep A First Aid Kit On Hand

Accidents happen, whether at home or elsewhere. For this reason, it’s wise to keep a first aid kit in an easily accessible location in your house so that you can quickly tend to any injuries. When buying first aid supplies, you should look at waterproof first aid kits, as these will be the most reliable supplies to have near children. Ensure you’re familiar with how everything works in your equipment so that you can use it if needed.

Take Precautions In The Kitchen

Kitchen safety is a big concern for parents, as kitchens contain a lot of potential hazards for kids. Ensure to keep stovetops and ovens entirely out of reach from your children. You should also never leave open fire or flame unattended around your kids, especially if you have a curious toddler who likes to touch and grab at things. If you put your children in a high chair, ensure they’re strapped into it properly before leaving them unattended for any length of time. You should also keep cleaning supplies out of reach from children; if this is not possible, put those items up on high shelves or behind cabinet doors to limit the risk.

Spend Time Outdoors

Exposure to nature is good for your physical and mental well-being. That’s why it’s essential to encourage your kids to spend time outdoors. Supervise them when they do, though, as there are still plenty of dangers to watch out for in the wild. Poisonous plants like poison oak and ivy are a risk you should take precautions for, as kids tend to be attracted to these toxic plants. You should also check the area to ensure there aren’t any thorns or sharp rocks before letting your child run around freely.

Install a Security System

Even if you have a fence or lock your front door, you’re probably aware that there are countless other ways to get into your house. That’s why it’s wise to install a security system in your home that will alert you to any intruders who might try breaking in. Even if they don’t break into the house, having an alarm system can help you feel much safer. It’s always good to have an alarm system that works properly. Get one that is well-reviewed and sturdy enough to stand up against any potential intruders.

As you can see, there are all kinds of ways you can keep your home safe for your kids. If you tend to feel overwhelmed by the idea of trying to prepare for your kids and keep them safe, you can always hire a company to install security systems in your home for you once they’ve helped you pick out the best option.
