National Monument of the Week: Statue of Liberty

Over 125 years ago France gifted the Statue of Liberty to the United States to commemorate the centennial of the United States independence. Although the sculpture, designed by Frederic Auguste Batholdi, didn’t arrive in America until June of 1885, 1876 is written on the statue as a reminder of its significance. Lady Liberty is intended to represent the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas.
