Italia Independent Disrupts Eyewear with New Materials

Known in Italy for their sleek and innovative eyewear designs, Italia Independent is quickly becoming the go-to brand for global style enthusiasts. With a unique carbon fiber base, each pair of glasses is lightweight and durable allowing more attention to be placed on aesthetics.

Combining timeless lines with pioneering materials, Italia Independent invokes its brand name to the fullest – Italia representing the place where the firm is headquartered and draws cultural inspiration, and Independent embodying a free-thinking nature toward the product.

Launched in January of 2007 by Lapo Elkann, Andrea Tessitore, and Giovanni Accongiagioco, the company’s unique use of carbon fibers was first inspired by Elkann’s grandfather’s sailboat “Stealth”. The decision to form an eyewear company made solely out of carbon fibers led to a new slogan “Made in Italy 2.0.” This symbolized a new era, one that combined classical style with unconventional elements.

Italia Independent Innovative New Designs

The company made another leap forward in 2014 when they became the first to introduce velvet frames to the world. The MIT Technology Review of Italy recognized Italia Independent for this innovative design and placed them in the “smart and disruptive” category as one the Top 10 Most Innovative Italian Companies.

The following year they were recognized for developing a new iThermic line. Thermic technology is a complex process that involves applying a thermo chromic substance to the surface of the glasses. A chemical reaction then takes place when the temperature of the treatment reaches 30 C/80 F, causing the frame to change colors.

These glasses are unlike anything you’ve ever worn. Shock your friends on the beach when you show up with one color and leave with another. The iThermic line makes glasses incredibly versatile so the wearer doesn’t have to switch glasses throughout the day.

What separates Italia Independent from other brands is their collaborative spirit. Ducati, Pinko, and even Ghostbusters (the movie) have all taken part in co-designing specialty lines that offer Italia Independent’s signature touch.

Most recently, Adidas has partnered with the ultra-chic Italian eyewear company to design their first ever Adidas Original collection. As part of a global ad campaign, Adidas is stepping into the future and this time opening up a new product line exclusively designed by Italia Independent.
