Looking for a rustic getaway? Take an autumn weekend to drive up the California coast to Sonoma County. Here, among the famed wine country, you’ll find MacArthur Place, a boutique resort filled with farmhouse-style bungalows, regal sophistication, and supreme hospitality.

Golden vineyards and sun-kissed valleys greet you on your drive through an oak-studded highway. As you turn into the round-about driveway of the hotel, a young and handsome valet crew gallantly welcomes your arrival. This is just the beginning of what will be considered one of the most elegant and divine accommodation experiences.

Upon check-in, a friendly staff member is waiting to escort you through the gardens and to your room. No need to call the bell desk at this hotel! You’ll find your luggage already inside. The attention to detail is unprecedented at MacArthur Place.

Each house has its own charm and comes with its own name – a title that represents something meaningful to the property. From the Standard Room to the Estate Spa Cottage, expect the “wow” factor in any of the 64 rooms on-premise.

The Myrtle Cottage – Room 41

Vaulted ceilings lead you into a clean and relaxed environment. White walls, beige trim, charcoal suede drawers, and wood accents frame the room. A signature sliding barn door closes off the bathroom where indirect lighting surrounds the mirrors and heated floors keep your feet warm at a comfortable 92 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cozy up in your plush bathrobe and deluxe green slippers as you sit back and take in the wood-burning fireplace from your King-size bed. Burlap sacks filled with wood bricks come pre-made and ready to be lit. A cushioned storage bench is placed at the foot of the bed, facing a modern living room.

You won’t find a room-service menu here, but rather an iPad with direct communication to the on-site staff, and a minibar that comes equipped with a basket of complimentary healthy snacks. Pre-made cocktails and sodas are available for purchase in the mini-fridge.

Unlike most in-room coffee makers, at MacArthur Place, you’ll find a beautiful Fellow Stagg Pour-Over Kettle paired with Steeped Coffee– a Santa Cruz coffee brand offering sustainable nitro-sealed single-serve brew bags that fit a large ceramic mug. Condensed milk is used as a substitute for individual cream and sugar packets. This innovative approach to making coffee adds an extra sense of novelty to your morning routine.

Walk outside to your private patio and behold a ‘secret garden’ fantasy. A large tub placed under a cabana gazes out to a micro bamboo forest, while a copper and granite outdoor shower sits in the corner. Revel in this one of a kind slice of nature’s paradise before strolling through the landscaped pathways.

Traverse Through the Trees

Hit the pool, book a massage, or rent a complimentary Blix eBike for the day to explore the quaint neighborhood. But be back in time for the lobby’s happy hour (from 5-6 pm daily) where some of the local wineries are featured!

Grab a glass and head out to one of the many cushy community fire pits sprinkled throughout the six-acre property. Make a few new friends as you soak in the pink and purple sunset before joining Layla for dinner.

This esteemed Mediterranean kitchen’s pre-opening concept was in partnership with Zakarian Hospitality, under the direction of celebrity chef and Chopped judge Geoffrey Zakarian. Arrive hungry as you’ll want to try many tapas-style dishes on the menu!

Dine in Style

Tasteful, enchanting and intimate are just a few words that come to mind when stepping into Layla. The bright and airy dining room creates a rapturous allure while the outdoor terrace offers comfortable lounge furniture under heat lamps.

Inspired by the best of Spanish, Italian and Middle Eastern cuisine, executive chef Cole Dickinson takes guests on a tour of the Mediterranean Sea. He mindfully selects healthy and organic ingredients that serve both vegan and carnivorous diets.

We recommend trying the following:

Patatas Bravas – this Spanish staple comes with an airy crisp and a slight twist to the traditional dish.

Heirloom Tomato & Burrata Salad – a seasonal favorite, heirloom tomatoes are drizzled with a basil oil, topped with burrata and garnished with charcoal croutons.

Hamachi Crudo – a savory tuna-tartare with a creamy lemon aioli topped with a shredded marinated fennel slaw will leave your mouth watering for more.

Ribeye – a decadent charred 16oz steak with crispy potatoes, confit onion, and a homemade steak sauce. We paired this with a side of Brussel sprouts for some added green.

Loukoumades – these signature warm donut holes come with a whipped lemon curd and candied pistachio. We paired it with a seasonal vanilla ice cream and pomegranate sorbet to give it an ala mode taste.

The land that MacArthur Place occupies dates back to the 1860s when it belonged to Missouri rancher David Burris. After moving his farm to Sonoma, Burris became the man responsible for bankrolling the California wine industry in the late 1800s. The property changed ownership several times over the next hundred years and by 1997, this once farmstead had turned into a glamorous country inn.

Today, MacArthur Place is owned by IMH Financial Corporation who recently gave the property a $25 million makeover, restoring some of its token historical features. In addition, the owners smartly invested in a generator for the property, knowing the region is greatly hit by brush fires and power lines are temporarily turned off to prevent such disasters. The investment began paying for itself in October of 2019 when PG&E cut power to Sonoma residents for 72 hours, and MacArthur was the only place for miles that had an operating business.
