Sport of the week: Baseball

Baseball is one of the most popular sports in American culture during the spring and summer months. People are attracted to the game because of their desire to bask in the entire experience. From hot dogs and cracker jacks to catching foul balls and the 7th inning stretch, there is something about baseball that brings people together. It is a great sport to watch with a group of people, especially during home games where everyone can root for their team.

The unpredictability of the game is also an attractive feature. Because play time is indefinite with “outs” determining the lead, the sport leaves open endless possibilities for a team to recover from a huge deficit. As they say, the game is “not over until it’s over” so excitement is derived from the sheer possibility that the course of the game could change at the last minute.

Major League Baseball is the highest level played in the U.S. The season officially begins after a series of exhibition games are played through March then culminates with the World Series, where the winner of the National League playoffs plays the winner of the American League playoffs.
