Varicose Veins: What Are They And How To Effectively Treat Them

Millennial Magazine - varicose-veins

Varicose veins are veins that are clearly seen, and no one really likes to have them as they don’t look so great. This happens when your blood is not able to flow effectively. In these cases, patients could feel symptoms like itchiness, pain, or other forms of discomfort as a result of Varicose veins. However, in more severe cases, a varicose vein can develop into varicose ulcers on the skin or become ruptured. For patients experiencing these issues, there are treatments available within both modern medicine and home remedies. Here’s a look at some of the ways by which Varicose veins and their symptoms can be effectively treated.

Surgery

Doctors usually advise that patients suffering from Varicose veins don’t have a pressing need to get treatment if they are not experiencing any painful symptoms. If however, symptoms of intense itchiness and pain are starting to occur, surgery may be one of the options that can be considered. This would only be a viable option if the patient is suffering from very large varicose veins that is difficult to treat medicinally.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

If the veins aren’t large in size, they can be treated by a laser-based treatment in which spider veins are closed off by applying strong bursts of light to them. Rather than trying to ascertain for yourself if you require such treatment or not, patients are highly recommended to visit a vein doctor to get a professional diagnosis and follow the advice.

If your doctor recommends that you get Endovenous Laser Treatment, be wary that these might cause some temporary markings which will gradually fade away. In this procedure, a catheter is inserted into the patient’s vein and a small laser is threaded through it to be put over the affected vein. Small bursts of energy and heat are then released to seal the vein shut. This procedure is usually carried out under local anesthesia so it is one that is completely painless. There may be slight nerve damage, but this is usually for a brief period of time as they heal quite quickly.

Home Remedies

Some home remedies can be quite effective in treating varicose veins. These are the things  you can do from the comfort of your home, without much of a hassle. It is important to note that these home remedies can only be effective in cases that are not very severe. Patients with excessive varicose veins are still recommended to consult the doctor and go for surgical procedures or whichever treatment the doctor advises as that will be the most appropriate decision to make in case the situation is severe.  If your case isn’t severe, here are a few home remedies that you can try out to treat your varicose veins.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the best techniques that you can use to promote better blood flow to your legs. It isn’t necessary for you to go to the gym and put in extensive exercise sessions. You can do some light workouts around your house that can help regulate your blood flow and blood pressure.

Wear Compression Socks

Compression socks help patients in increasing the blood flow to the heart as they apply pressure onto the veins in the legs. Patients have been shown to exhibit signs of improvement after wearing these socks for only a few weeks.

Dietary Changes

One of the most common reasons for health-related problems is an unhealthy diet. Your current dietary habits may be the reason why certain issues such as varicose veins are exasperated. When the body retains too much water, this is due to the fact that the food being eaten is much too high in sodium. However, anything that has potassium in such as bananas will greatly help in reducing this retention which will ultimately help treat varicose veins. Foods that are high in potassium include lentils, almonds, white beans, and potatoes.

Keep Moving

Movement is essential to keep a steady blood flow in the body. If you are someone that works a desk job for long hours, you must make sure that you are taking regular short breaks in which you get up and move around a little bit so that the legs can receive an appropriate amount of blood flow. Sitting down for long or wearing tight clothing can restrict blood flow and worsen the condition of varicose veins in most patients.

If you are suffering from Varicose veins, it’s always best to consult a doctor and get a professional opinion on the best way to proceed. If your varicose veins are not causing symptoms such as pain or itchiness, you can use any of the above-mentioned home remedies to cure yourself. If, however, your symptoms are severe and you notice that your varicose veins are quite large, you might have to go for surgical options as per the doctor’s recommendations.
