BeRemedy: Community Love Through Social Media
Social media has been taking over our generation’s life. Everyone is joined at the hip with their smartphone, and are constantly checking and updating their profiles on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. However, social media is not just for entertainment. Blake Canterbury, founder of BeRemedy, seems to have figured out how to use social media to help others.
BeRemedy is an organization currently based in Atlanta, Georgia that aims to help others through the use of social media communication. It is the easiest way for people to interact with one another and help those in their community. BeRemedy finds needs in local communities, posts them on their website, and then shares them through social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. If someone reads the post and is able to help, then all they have to do is reply. In cases where an individual can not directly help with what is needed, they could always re-post in order to spread the word to those who might be able to offer their assistance.
BeRemedy’s motto is “See the need. Be the remedy.” And it is just as simple as it sounds. BeRemedy receives community needs through credible non-profits such as United Way and Rotary International. After verifying what the non-profits needs, tweets are immediately sent, blogs are posted, and Facebook statuses are updated to blast out the need to those who can help. So far, BeRemedy has served over 133,000 needs worldwide. In a 2011 report, CNN showed just how quickly BeRemedy can act. When a single mother in Atlanta welcomed home her 20 year-old son home, she did not have an extra bed. Her kind neighbor reached out to BeRemedy and within fifteen minutes the mother had a bed for her son.
Most recently BeRemedy took part in the 2012 Red Bull Soapbox Derby Race which took place on June 9. Teaming up with Atlanta Mission Ending Homelessness to help build a car, BeRemedy stepped in to get the job done. Before the start of the race, BeRemedy posted a need to Twitter – they were collecting men’s business attire to properly dress homeless men for job interviews. By the end of the race, over 500 suits were donated and the need was met. BeRemedy also placed 2nd in the People’s Choice Award.
Blake Canterbury has inspired thousands of Millennials to because active in their community and reach out to those in need through his work with BeRemedy. He has created one of the easiest way for everyone to connect and find out how they can help each other. The donations might seem small to some of us, but the difference it makes in someone else’s life is great.
