Why Philly Festivals and Rocky Stairs Will Always Feel Like Home

The City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia—fondly known as Philly—has been a vital source of historical significance, unforgettable Philly festivals, and personal achievements throughout my life.

Homecoming as a proud Penn alum signified a chance to celebrate and reconnect with the city, lifelong friends, and an inspirational community.

It seems every step I take, I’m stepping into American history. I step left, and I’m in the middle of a vibrant parade.

And if I move to the right, the amazing culinary experience and fierce debates about the best Philly cheesesteak remind me that if Tony Benet can leave his heart in San Francisco, I can proudly leave my heart in Philly.

There Are Festivals and then There are Philly Festivals

Philadelphia hosts numerous festivals throughout the year, but none potentially reach the joyous level of the Odunde celebration, which Lois Fernandez based on Nigerian New Year traditions.

A million people join together at a massive celebration to enjoy delicious food and artisans’ crafts while listening to the captivating rhythm of the African beat. It’s like combining a small town feeling of love and harmony.

I dare you to find another event, and especially another city, that features people performing in elaborate costumes for a competition during a New Year’s Day parade in freezing temperatures.

This holiday tradition ranks as one of the most loved state-wide festivities, and it is one of the reasons why I wear my love for Philadelphia on my sleeve.

If you think New York has strange characters, I’ll bet you that they can’t outdo the characters that Philly has to offer. I can’t tell you how many strangers just walked up to me and gave me pointers and advice that I didn’t ask for. The only problem is that not all of it’s good!

So Much History

Besides stuffing my face with all the soft pretzels, in the heart of downtown Philly is so much American history. My heart skips a beat every time I step into Independence Hall, the very place where America’s Founding Fathers set the stage for the incredible liberties that I enjoy today.

The biggest thrill that makes me shed a tear is to sit in the same seat as others like Thomas Jefferson where the US. Constitution was born.

Just a stone’s throw away is the Liberty Bell, another massive icon that makes me proud to be an American.

Even though the large crack in the bell prevented it from ringing for centuries, it makes me feel proud to be part of the ultimate melting pot because of its role in ending the horrors of slavery during the Civil War.

Yo Adrian, I Did It!

When I’m feeling down and need some inspiration, I play the Rocky theme song. However, when I’m at a crossroads in my life, I remember that I’m Philly strong by running up the same stairs as Rocky Balboa.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art features 72 stone steps that have transformed into an emblematic symbol for the city. The famous 1976 film “Rocky” featured a South Philly boxer as he ran up those steps in a memorable training sequence.

Just like Philly Festivals that bring the city together in celebration and spirit, Rocky’s climb reminds us of the collective resilience that defines Philadelphia. Every determined underdog saw Rocky’s climb to the steps as their own symbol of perseverance.

I, like the rest of Philadelphia, believe in the symbolic message of running the steps, which shows that success comes through hard work and determination.

Many tourists make it a point to run up the steps to see the Rocky Statue, although I can’t outrun the kids like Rocky did!

Feel the Love at Night

Philadelphia’s music scene has something for everyone. As a huge fan of Jazz music, I code-switch like most Philadelphians with R&B, Hip-Hop, and more.

It makes me proud that Philadelphia is the home of many musical greats, including the Great Philly Soul artists like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Hip-hop and R&B are well represented, too, with Boyz II Men, Chubby Checker, Will Smith, and Mac Miller.

While I’m still dreaming about seeing Will Smith perform in person, many of Philly’s local talent give back to the city at the many nightly Jazz and local concerts.

Philly has no shortage of musical halls and Jazz concerts to pass the night away and make a new friend. With so many casinos near me, I always look forward to seeing some of my favorite bands and idols when I came of age in Philly.

Philly Festivals Celebrate the Heart of America

Every visit to Philadelphia feels like opening a treasured time capsule—one that holds both national history and personal milestones.

The laughter of old friends, the aroma of cheesesteaks on bustling corners, and the echoes of jazz pouring from cozy venues remind me why I always return. It’s where past and present dance together on cobblestone streets.
