Nestled in the quaint San Francisco neighborhood of North Beach lies Club Fugazi, home to Steve Silver’s iconic musical comedy, Beach Blanket Babylon. Perhaps the longest running show in US theatre history- now in it’s 43rd straight year- this colorful extravaganza is a non-stop parade of celebrities, politicians and household brands alike parodied by a talented ensemble cast with big voices and impeccable comedic timing.
Produced by Jo Schuman Silver and Directed by Kenny Maslow, this 90-minute musical rollercoaster of hilarious puns will quickly take you from anticipation to awe and back again. The energy in the room explodes with the first downbeat of the Blues Brothers theme song from musical director, Bill Keck’s flawless house band (complete with horn section). Memorable characters from the past four decades parade across the stage in a flurry of solos and medleys laced with familiar themes and timely references. The exquisite, larger-than-life costumes (hats specifically) are sure to impress even the most accomplished Hollywood costume designers. And the ever-evolving quick-witted script, will have your face hurting from smiling and laughing out loud.
The story follows the plight of Snow White, played by Amanda Cleary Blatchford, in her exhausting search for Prince Charming. We travel around the world with help from Glinda The Good Witch, played by Chevé Alexander, as Snow White (aka Snowball, Snowflake…you get it) evaluates potential suitors including flamboyant King Louis XIV, hilariously played by Kurt Branom (who also does a hysterical Michele Bachmann)! While the journey to Europe is less than fruitful and compatible suitors are far and few between, “Snow” discovers that true love can be found even if your Prince Charming isn’t who you thought he’d be.
Recommended by travel guides and theatre critics, Beach Blanket Babylon is intended for audiences 21+. Theatre patrons of all political persuasions- red, blue, or somewhere in the middle- will give this show a thumbs up. Even Aunt Bitsy and Uncle Otis from “Small-town USA” will leave the show reeling with delight.
