Los Angeles has no shortage of destination brunches, but stepping into Majordomo on a sun-drenched winter afternoon felt less like a casual midday meal and more like entering a culinary stage set for indulgence. Nestled in an industrial stretch of Chinatown-adjacent Downtown LA—just off the Broadway Bridge near Apotheke—the restaurant sits within a neighborhood that pulses with creative reinvention. Graffiti murals mingle with film production studios and emerging galleries, creating a gritty yet inspired backdrop that perfectly frames Majordomo LA’s bold culinary identity.

It was just after noon when we arrived for brunch. The California sun was blazing, one of those radiant winter days that only Los Angeles seems capable of producing. The iconic lemon sign outside Majordomo was the only landmark we needed to confirm we’d reached the right place. What waited beyond the doors was an environment that felt both urban and unexpectedly serene.

The restaurant’s atrium-style dining room resembles a greenhouse built inside a warehouse. Vaulted ceilings stretch high above a bright, open dining area, where natural light spills across communal tables and polished concrete floors. The bar anchors the space like a modern hearth. Outside, the patio unfolds beneath metal awnings strung with warm bistro lights, and at its center stands a beautiful tree, so integral to the space that the awning itself was built around it. Along the back wall, a massive graffiti mural injects vibrant color, reinforcing the artistic energy of the surrounding district.

In a city known for spectacle, Majordomo LA manages to feel both grand and grounded at once.

Brunch at Majordomo: A Playful Symphony of Texture and Flavor

Before the food arrived, we began the afternoon with a round of drinks that immediately set the tone for the experience.

The Kumquat Mimosa was bright and effervescent, its citrusy tang cutting through the sweetness in a way that felt almost refreshing enough to be mistaken for sunshine in liquid form. The Yuzu Medicina followed, a smoky mezcal reinterpretation of the classic Penicillin cocktail. The yuzu added a sharp citrus lift that danced against the mezcal’s earthy depth.

Then came the Breakfast Martini, which leaned toward the spirit of a refined Lemon Drop but elevated with a shrub element that introduced subtle acidity and complexity. Served in a coup glass, it felt elegant without being overly precious.

And finally, the Fluffy Orange Juice, a deceptively simple brunch staple that proved refreshing and vibrant, balancing the cocktail lineup perfectly.

What struck me immediately about Majordomo’s service was the speed and rhythm of the meal. Within moments of settling into our drinks, dishes began appearing at the table with remarkable efficiency. The pacing felt intentional, as if the kitchen understood the cadence of brunch better than most restaurants.

The Bing Bun Basket

The first dish to arrive was the Bing Bun Basket, and it immediately set a high bar.

These were no ordinary table rolls. Warm, freshly baked salted butter buns arrived alongside three inventive spreads: black sesame and citron cream cheese, honey whipped butter, and chili jam ricotta.

Each bite offered a new flavor experience.

The honey whipped butter was decadently creamy, with a sweetness that melted into the warm bread and lingered just long enough to tempt you into another bite.

The black sesame and citron cream cheese was perhaps the most surprising pairing. I’d never encountered sesame seed butter blended with cream cheese before, yet the combination worked beautifully. The nutty intensity of the sesame was softened by the cream cheese’s tang, while the citron added a bright citrus lift.

Then there was the chili jam ricotta, a spread that balanced silky neutrality with gentle heat and tang. The ricotta served as a perfect canvas for the chili jam’s sweet spice.

It was an opening act that made it clear Majordomo LA cares deeply about layers of flavor…and perhaps even more about texture.

Next came two dishes that leaned into comfort food territory but with unmistakable finesse.

The Stuffed Peppers featured shishito peppers filled with sausage, then fried in a delicate tempura batter. The exterior was light and crisp while the interior remained juicy and savory. They were served with a creamy dill ranch that added a cooling herbaceous counterpoint.

Alongside them arrived the Chicken Wings, glazed in a sweet and spicy gochujang honey sauce. The skin was perfectly crisp while the meat inside remained tender and juicy. A cilantro ranch accompanied the wings, and pairing it with the gochujang sauce created an unexpectedly addictive flavor combination.

It was the kind of dish where each bite demanded experimentation—dip here, drizzle there, mix sauces until you land on your personal ideal balance.

Moments like these reveal why Majordomo has become such a celebrated culinary destination.

Corn Pancakes

Then came what may have been the surprise standout of the meal: the Corn Pancakes.

Made from a blend of cornmeal and flour, these pancakes defied the typical fluffy brunch archetype. Instead, they arrived with beautifully crisp golden edges and a buttery crunch in every bite. The texture was extraordinary. Crispy on the outside with a tender, slightly grainy interior that carried the natural sweetness of corn.

But what truly elevated the dish were the crispy rice toppers, which added an additional layer of crackling texture that made each forkful deeply satisfying. The pancakes were finished with a drizzle of palm syrup, offering a richer, more caramel-like sweetness than traditional maple, and a generous dollop of whipped crème fraîche that brought a cooling creaminess to balance the dish.

The combination of warm pancakes, crunchy rice, silky crème fraîche, and deep palm syrup sweetness created a layered bite that felt both indulgent and unexpectedly sophisticated.

It was a dish that didn’t simply satisfy, it lingered in memory long after the table was cleared.

Ham & Cheese Sando

The Ham & Cheese Sando was another indulgent highlight.

Imagine, if you will, a Croque Monsieur and a Croque Madame merging into one glorious creation. Thick slices of toast sandwich savory ham and melted Gruyère, then the entire dish is crowned with a perfectly fried egg and drenched in a luxurious béchamel sauce.

It was unapologetically rich.

Cutting into the sandwich released molten cheese and silky sauce that soaked into the bread while the egg yolk added another layer of decadence. Every bite felt comforting and indulgent. This is the kind of brunch dish that encourages grazing at the table.

Steak & Egg Crispy Rice

The Steak and Egg Crispy Rice was perhaps the most intriguing dish of the afternoon.

Served in a large Le Creuset Dutch oven, the presentation alone hinted at its generosity. The dish featured salty, fried crispy rice layered with chunks of steak, pickled daikon, scallions, and sesame seeds.

The crispy rice delivered the signature textural crunch that defines so many of Chef David Chang’s dishes. Each bite balanced savory steak richness with the bright acidity of pickled daikon and the freshness of scallions.

The portion size was substantial. Easily shareable among two to four diners depending on the rest of the order.

Yet it was flavorful enough to stand entirely on its own.

Sweet & Spicy BBQ Pork Ribs

To close the savory portion of our brunch, we ordered the Sweet and Spicy BBQ Smoked Pork Ribs.

They arrived glistening and fragrant, their smoky aroma drifting across the table before the first bite.

The meat was astonishingly tender. So delicate it nearly melted off the bone. In fact, the texture reminded me of smoked salmon in its softness, which is not a comparison I make lightly when discussing ribs.

The glaze balanced sweetness, spice, and smoke in perfect harmony. It was a dish that demanded slow appreciation.

The Legacy Behind Majordomo LA

Understanding the experience at Majordomo requires understanding the culinary legacy behind it.

The restaurant is part of the Momofuku restaurant group founded by chef David Chang, whose influence on modern dining cannot be overstated. Chang opened the first Momofuku Noodle Bar in New York City in 2004, blending Asian culinary traditions with bold experimentation and a rebellious spirit.

Over time, Momofuku evolved into a global hospitality brand with restaurants spanning multiple cities and culinary concepts.

Chang himself (known for his restless creativity and boundary-pushing approach) has become one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary food culture. Through restaurants, television, podcasts, and writing, he has consistently challenged traditional culinary hierarchies.

Majordomo, which opened in Los Angeles in 2018, reflects Chang’s ability to fuse comfort food with refined technique. The menu draws from Korean, Chinese, and American influences while maintaining a playful, shareable spirit.

That ethos was evident in every dish we tasted.

Texture as a Culinary Signature

If one theme defined the brunch at Majordomo LA, it was texture.

Every dish offered a unique bite.

Crunchy pancakes. Crispy rice. Tempura peppers. Crackling chicken skin. Tender ribs. Creamy sauces.

It’s the kind of intentional layering that keeps a meal exciting from start to finish. For diners who appreciate the sensory experience of food (not just flavor but mouthfeel) Majordomo LA delivers in abundance.

A Brunch Worth Seeking Out

As the afternoon sun shifted across the patio and the hum of Downtown LA traffic echoed faintly in the distance, it became clear that brunch at Majordomo isn’t just a meal, it’s a culinary journey shaped by bold flavors, inventive textures, and a vibrant setting that mirrors the creative pulse of the city itself.

Between the inventive cocktails, the playful yet refined dishes, and the energetic industrial-chic atmosphere, Majordomo LA manages to capture the essence of Los Angeles dining: ambitious, eclectic, and deeply satisfying.

For anyone seeking a brunch that balances comfort with creativity, Majordomo stands as one of the city’s most compelling tables.
