There is something undeniably magical about the snowy peaks of northern Utah each January, but nothing quite compares to the electrifying energy of Sundance 2025. Trading in the destructive chaos of the Palisades Fires (which personally affected our staff) for the crisp mountain air was like stepping into another dimension—one where film, fashion, music, and snow collided for ten days of non-stop revelry.

While the official festival lasts more than a week, the real action ramps up during the first weekend, when industry insiders, Hollywood A-listers, and creative newcomers flood Park City’s Main Street.

Millennial Magazine spent seven glorious days in this winter haven, soaking up everything from the hush-hush VIP events to the public brand activations that seemed to sprout on every corner. The result? A festival experience brimming with cinematic marvels, unforgettable parties, and just enough ski time to keep us feeling alive—albeit a little winded from the altitude.

Park City, draped in fresh powder, felt like the ultimate escape from the smoke and stress back home in Los Angeles. Saturday’s full day flurry of snowfall added to the festival’s charm, lending a dreamy quality to the bustling streets.

We found ourselves navigating playful pop-up installations and warming up in plush lounges that served both hot cocoa and artisan cocktails. The municipality’s decision to block off Main Street to cars for the very first time had a transformative effect.

It turned the entire festival into one enormous block party, with a parade of puffer jackets, beanies, snow boots, and excited chatter about films, celebrity sightings, and can’t-miss soirées. Everything you’d want in a winter festival (and then some) was right at your gloved fingertips.

Films That Stole the Show at Sundance 2025

Before we delve into the after-dark antics and slope-side adventures, let’s talk about the heartbeat of the festival: the films. Regardless of the glitz and glamour swirling around them, these narratives remain the true reason why thousands make the pilgrimage to this mountain town each year.

So let’s look at some of the standout films…

Millennial Magazine - Travel - Destination - Atropia Sundance Dramatic Winner

© Atropia

Atropia

Brimming with raw emotion and timely insight, Atropia took home Sundance’s Grand Jury Best Drama Award, solidifying Alia Shawkat as an actress to be reckoned with. Set against the backdrop of a 2006 military simulation of Iraq, the film traces the emotional journey of a crisis actor who commits wholeheartedly to her role as an Iraqi native.

As she grapples with the blurred lines between performance and reality, she finds herself unexpectedly falling in love with an American soldier. Beyond the romance, Atropia spotlights the real-life existence of over 200 simulation facilities scattered across the U.S.—places where actors reenact crisis scenarios to train soldiers. Viewers walk away with fresh empathy for those who inhabit these complicated spaces, living both fantasy and genuine emotional toil.

By Design

Juliette Lewis shines in this offbeat indie, centering on a woman who develops an intense, even romantic attachment to a chair. Shot in a manner reminiscent of live theater—lots of long takes and deliberately staged scenes—By Design challenges viewers to question the boundaries of love, identity, and the objects to which we assign meaning. It may sound whimsical, but the film’s narrative manages to maintain an emotional core, shedding light on how modern society often finds comfort in the unconventional.

Rabbit Trap

In a striking departure from his earlier roles, Dev Patel leads Rabbit Trap alongside Rosy McEwen, a married couple dedicated to capturing ASMR recordings for experimental music in 1970s Wales. Their serene life of collecting ambient sounds evolves into a riveting psychological thriller when a mischievous fairy spirit becomes fixated on joining their family. Equal parts eerie and enthralling, the film features lush cinematography that captures the rolling English countryside, while Patel and McEwen’s earnest performances keeps us invested in every whispered turn.

Rebuilding

Josh O’Connor tugs at the heartstrings in Rebuilding, portraying a Wyoming cowboy coming to terms with the loss of his ranch to fire. Given the recent devastation of the Los Angeles Fires, the film’s focus on resilience and starting over hits close to home. O’Connor’s portrayal dives deep into the emotional toll of watching your ancestral land go up in flames, and the long, grueling process of constructing a future from ashes.

Not to be overlooked, several other standout titles had the festival abuzz: Jennifer Lopez dazzled in The Kiss of the Spider Woman, a riveting adaptation of the famed stage production; Jimpa introduced a surprising father/daughter dynamic between Olivia Colman and John Lithgow; and Andre is an Idiot walked away with the Audience Award for Best Documentary.

Hitting the Slopes and Brand Activations: The Other Side of the Festival

While the cinematic line-up was undeniably strong, part of the allure of Sundance 2025 is the chance to indulge in Park City’s winter playground. Early on, we made the decision to forgo Friday’s industry screenings in favor of Deer Valley’s pristine ski runs. Best. Decision. Ever. While most festival-goers were jostling for position at the biggest film premieres, we found the slopes virtually empty—a blissful treat for adrenaline junkies who enjoy carving fresh powder.

Veuve Clicquot at The Montage, Deer Valley Resort

The bougie Deer Valley Ski Resort offered more than just downhill thrills. For a midday break, we ventured into the Veuve Clicquot Après Lounge, an ultra-chic yurt outside of The Montage Hotel that embodied the perfect blend of ski culture and party vibes.

Picture rustic alpine furniture, snow-packed champagne buckets, a live DJ, and a deserving glass of Veuve after shredding all morning. It was a snapshot of the opulence that festival-goers dream about when planning a Sundance trip: the glamorous collision of high fashion, winter sports, and signature cocktails.

Back on Main Street, brand activations seemed to pop up at every turn, each one elbowing for the spotlight in an already dazzling festival landscape. Acura seized a prime stretch of real estate and conjured a winter wonderland complete with drifting faux snow and hypnotic LED walls, all brilliantly showcasing the brand’s newest vehicle. Yet the real show-stealer was the partnership with ASCAP’s “Music Cafe,” a cozy hideaway where a mix of chart-topping veterans and rising artists took the stage for intimate acoustic sets.

The standout performance? Hands down, Grammy-winning songwriter Toby Gad, renowned for penning massive hits like Fergie’s “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” Beyoncé’s “If I Were a Boy,” and John Legend’s “All of Me.” Gad’s daughter, Mae Mae, a rising star in her own right, joined forces with Broadway powerhouse Antonique Smith to breathe new life into Gad’s greatest tracks, reminding festival-goers that at Sundance 2025, music remains just as magical as the movies.

Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge

Not to be outdone, Chase Sapphire Reserve offered festival-goers an all-day oasis packed with gourmet treats, insightful film panels, and cozy corners to rest weary feet. By nightfall, the lounge transformed into a high-energy nightclub for cardmembers and their lucky plus-ones, complete with an open bar and dance floor that pulsed into the early hours.

Adding to the fun, Sapphire Reserve introduced the “Brim Bar”—a milliner’s paradise where guests could size and embellish their own cowboy hats—bringing a taste of western flair to the mountains. And in a nod to foodies everywhere, they also unveiled a pop-up from Denver’s celebrated Tavernetta, dishing up refined bites that had everyone raving.

Audible Lounge

Perched above Arhaus with arguably the best real estate on Main Street, the Audible Lounge quickly became the talk of the festival scene. Built around the brand’s signature color palette, the outdoor deck boasted an impressive view of the Park City slopes and quaint mountain chalets. Even more dazzling was the artfully designed Audible plexiglass sign above the cozy fire pit and yellow snowglobe hangout, which doubled as both a statement piece and an espresso bar.

Attendees were invited to cozy up by the fire with s’mores in hand, fueling their sweet tooth while enjoying a much-needed Wi-Fi zone to stay connected. Adding to its industry clout, Audible partnered with Variety to host panels and interviews, making it a crucial stop for anyone wanting to see (or be) the next big thing in film and media.

Unforgettable Parties Under the Winter Sky

Where there’s a film festival, there’s a party—and Sundance 2025 absolutely delivered. The nights were just as jam-packed and exciting as the daytime activities, if not more so, especially for those who thrive on the social energy of mingling filmmakers, musicians, and die-hard cinema lovers.

Questlove for “Sly Lives”

Kicking off Friday evening was Questlove’s electrifying party celebrating the documentary Sly Lives (The Curse of Black Genius) with VIBE Magazine. Hosted at the Disney House, the festivities featured neon green and yellow lighting that created a funky, almost otherworldly glow around the crowd. Signature Casamigos Mezcal cocktails flowed freely, and the air crackled with the expectation that something phenomenal was about to happen.

Questlove, legendary drummer of The Roots, did not disappoint when he hopped on the turntables to spin a live vinyl set that seamlessly blended classic funk and modern hip-hop. The synergy between music, film, and activism was palpable, as attendees vibed not just to the tunes, but also to the powerful story behind Sly Stone’s influence on generations of musicians.

Insomniac’s High Altitude Series

Electronic music powerhouse Insomniac made its Sundance debut with a brand-new series aptly named High Altitude. Held at the freshly unveiled venue The Marquis, Friday night headliner Black Coffee drew a fashion-forward crowd dressed in snow boots and fur hats. Insomniac left its mark, turning the Marquis in a reminiscent Exchange LA.

Sunday night saw Dillon Francis take the decks, delivering a high-octane blend of dance tracks that kept the floor packed well into the early hours. The High Altitude series marked a bold new direction for Sundance parties, bridging the gap between the indie film set and the EDM festival crowd.

Anderson .Paak as DJ Pee Wee

Ever the chameleon, Anderson .Paak strolled into the Indie Director’s Lounge at The Cabin—affectionately dubbed “The Den”—adopting his DJ Pee Wee persona. Word spread like wildfire, prompting devoted fans to wait outside in the snow for two hours just for a shot at witnessing his sonic wizardry up close. Inside, .Paak curated a seamless set that had fans getting down. This sort of spontaneous, only-at-Sundance, vibe is precisely why the festival continues to captivate industry and local folks with each passing year.

Skiing, Sipping, and Star-Spotting

Between film screenings and branded soirées, we found a cherished sense of adventure. After all, Park City’s mountainous terrain beckons novices and seasoned skiers alike. Even if you only have time for a few runs, it’s worth swapping the festival’s hustle for a moment of peaceful solitude on the chairlift. Crisp air, breathtaking scenery, and the occasional star sighting at the bottom of the slopes (celebs ski too!) reminded us that there’s a whole world beyond the screening rooms and DJ booths.

Of course, the real star-spotting occurred at film premieres and exclusive gatherings, where you might rub elbows with Carry Mulligan while ordering your hot toddy or catch Juliette Lewis tapping her foot to an after-party DJ set.

The festival’s inclusive atmosphere ensured that big names and everyday festival enthusiasts shared the same spaces—some more glitzy than others, but all steeped in that beloved Sundance tradition of welcoming the next generation of talent.

Making the Most of the Snowy Escape

While the 10-day festival agenda can seem daunting, remember that sometimes the most memorable experiences come from unplanned detours—like stumbling into a hidden speakeasy at KemoSabe or scoring last-minute access to a private party.

The new pedestrian-friendly Main Street layout made it easier than ever to chase those happy accidents. And if you needed a quick break from the sensory overload, a cozy bit at Purple Sage or a warming whiskey flight at High West Distillery provided the perfect palate cleanser.

By the time the weekend wrapped up, we found ourselves brimming with stories—about the inspiring films we’d seen, the late-night DJ sets we’d danced through, the brand lounges that redefined “pop-up,” and even a few wipeouts on the slopes. Park City has a way of making you feel like you’ve lived several lifetimes in just a week, each memory punctuated by the swirl of fresh snow and the hum of creative camaraderie.

Farewell to the Fest, Until Next Year!

After days of swooshing down frosty trails, hopping from one neon-lit party to another, and discovering stories that moved our hearts and minds, Sundance 2025 leaves us both exhilarated and a little wistful.

Much like the falling snowflakes that glittered above Main Street, each film, event, and conversation was fleeting yet unforgettable, weaving together to form the unique tapestry that keeps cinema lovers and thrill-seekers returning year after year.

As whispers circulate that the Sundance organizers may relocate the festival in 2027—potentially to Boulder, CO or Cincinnati, OH—there’s an undeniable pang of uncertainty in the crisp mountain air.

After all, can any locale truly capture the same magic found in Park City’s snow-covered streets, where film lovers, celebrities, and the curious collide to shape an unforgettable cinematic adventure?

While the notion of new horizons might intrigue some, we can’t help but hope Sundance remains an alpine institution for years to come. There’s simply no substitute for that unique blend of passion, inspiration, and snowy escapism that only Park City can offer.
